An IT Field Technician Job Description

by Goos

IT Technicians are GREAT Paying Jobs

IT Technicians provide IT solutions to clients by being an integral part of their network. They are also responsible for supporting users through data maintenance. An IT technician can perform many IT services related to network, servers, laptops, desktop, tablets, video games systems and other related technologies.

IT Technicians generally work as consultants for companies and possess various IT jobs depending upon the nature of the company. IT Technicians can work as network technicians, help desk technicians, network engineers, software engineers and virtual private servers (VPS). The IT job description however, does not indicate the number of IT technicians who can be present on a given project. In such a scenario, IT technician jobs generally describe the scope of work, which IT Technologists are expected to know.

IT Technicians are expected to have wide knowledge about hardware, operating systems, networking, memory, processors, hard disk, software, documentation, security, monitoring, maintenance, backup and support. They should be familiar with various types of protocols and work procedures used in all such areas. The IT technician job summary indicates that they should possess proper knowledge about hardware design and testing, networking protocols and technology and computer system maintenance and troubleshooting. Their responsibilities would include installation, maintenance and upgrading of hardware, software, appliances and other devices.

IT technician jobs require knowledge in information technology and computer science, but not necessarily in each respective field individually. For instance, IT technicians are required to have strong knowledge about networking and data transmission, especially data encryption. They must also be familiar with various computer hardware including motherboard, processors, memory, graphics and sound cards. IT technician jobs describe the wide range of services provided by them, which include repairs, upgrades and modifications of hardware and other electronic devices and programs. In addition, an IT technician is also responsible for the maintenance of client computers and networks.

As a matter of fact, IT technician jobs describe the entire range of tasks, which include implementation, design, documentation and maintenance of various computer systems. The duties of IT technician vary according to the needs of the client. A major part of their duties is to troubleshoot problems of individual computers and networks. For instance, a business firm may hire an IT technician to repair their laptops and servers, while home users may have IT technician to look after their computers and printers. However, there are some IT technician job descriptions, which describe the scope of work of only one department or personnel. For instance, a telecommunications firm, which employs technicians to install network and other communications equipment, would need someone to install and repair telephone sets.

IT technician jobs demand a great amount of technical knowledge, as most of the tasks they perform revolve around the hardware. Thus, IT technician may be responsible for repairing, upgrading and maintaining hardware devices like motherboards, processors, hard disk drives, optical drives, keyboards and so on. They are also responsible for installing new hardware and developing new applications in the IT environment. While some technicians are specialized in particular areas of IT like computer software or networking, there are several who work with all types of computer hardware. In fact, an IT technician could be a jack-of-all trades, as he would not only be expected to fix computer systems but also conduct a wide range of laboratory tests.
